I have finally found the best food and treats for Lucy that she will eat and that has no gluten and will definitely not get recalled!!! It is called Canidae. It is made all in the USA. Just read their statement. It’s Lamb meal brown rice Canola oil, flax seed with extra cool things like Acidophilus (Lucy loves yogurt) Yucca Schidigera Extract and chicory root. The dog treats which she LOVES have sage extract, apples, carrots, eggs, rolled oats in addition to chicken meat turkey meat and barley. No sign of any gluten. Expensive? Hell yes. 9.99 for 5 lb bag and 4 bucks for a pound of treats. But it is cheaper than having her in the hospital again. I’ll just have to convince my husband.
She just ate half a bowl of the food and she is begging for more treats so… I’ll just have to get her this kind of food from now on. It feels so good to feed her something that I know isn’t poisoning her!!!
I am so frustrated trying to find the right kind of food for Lucy!!! Every time we choose one it gets banned. She was eating the American Nutrition treats – she was wolfing them down! Now they are recalled! She is hungry and she has lost weight. We’re also feeding her iams dry according to what the vet said – but I don’t think I’m happy about their practices. And I’m just worried that their food will make her sick. The vet also said to try something called nature’s taste Purina. I really don’t know what to do.
Yesterday something happened that let me know Lucy was OK. I don’t know why she did this. I went out to run errands for a bit and when I came back I let Lucy into the backyard. I thought, “Boy, she smells good!” She hasn’t been smelling very great you know
. So I brought her into the house and went into the bathroom to wash my hands. There is the tub was Lucy’s art work and trust me I wish I had taken a picture! Paw painting at the bottom of the tub with my very expensive Pureology hydrate shampoo! No wonder she smelled so great! I didn’t get mad at her and I just cleaned up the bathtub and left it on her paws and saved what shampoo I could. I have no idea why she did this. But I knew it was a sign that she was back to herself!
Lucy is much, much, much, much better! She is eating well (not enough yet but we’re working on it), chewing on her rawhide bone, playing with her tug toy, barking at the dogs outside of the window, pooping well, not throwing up and generally doing just great!! Yay for good doctors! Thanks for all of your support!!
Lucy Thanks You!
So the doctors determined that Lucy does not have Addison’s so they are giving her and ultra sound right now. She is still throwing up. I somehow feel this is all related to the food recall since she was eating the wrong kind of Alpo. Anyway, we can’t afford to keep her in the hospital forever… my husband says only until tomorrow. I pray they figure out what is wrong with her today!!
Well, Lucy hasn’t been able to hold down food for 4 days now. We took her back to the Vet who said her white blood count is low and many other signs that she probably has Addison’s Disease. She is at the Vet’s right now on an IV to get nutrients and then they will give her the Adissons test in about 12 hours. We pick her up tomorrow morning and we’ll know for sure.
The sympotoms fit her to a “T” :
The symptoms of Addison’s disease can be vague. More importantly, they are similar to the symptoms of many different problems. Initially, the dog may be listless, or seem depressed. Many dogs are described as just seeming off, or losing the normal sparkle in their eye. Lack of appetite is a good indicator. Other symptoms include gastro-intestinal problems like vomiting and diarrhea. Pain in the hindquarters, or generalized muscle weakness such as a dog that can’t jump onto the bed or couch as he has done in the past is not uncommon. Shivering or muscle tremors may also be present. The most important thing to remember is that you know your dog better than anyone. If something seems amiss, have it checked out.
So I know she is not happy there at the Vet’s right now but I hope she is sleeping and getting the nutrients she needs. There is a successful treatment for Addisons but it is very expensive… but at least there is a treatment!
We were feeding her Alpo Prime cuts in Gravy . It was only announced as being on the list April 5th. She is lethargic and she is throwing up all of the time. She’s in the front yard now and she won’t come in. Her Vet doesn’t get finished with sugery until 4:30 so I’ll take her then. I”m really worried about her.
